Library of American Civilization (LAC) The Library of American Civilization is a collection of materials relating to all aspects of American life and culture, from pre-Revolution to the outbreak of World War I. The Center for American studies is the only library in Belgium and one of only six libraries in Europe with access to this unique research tool. Note that all materials are printed on ultracards. This collection numbers 14,000 titles, or 20,000 volumes. Included are a diverse range of American studies titles and media relating to America: books, pamphlets, periodicals, public and private correspondence, and other material of foreign origin. Many books in this collection are rare, long out-of-print, or otherwise unavailable elsewhere. The LAC collection can be searched via the online catalog and thorough bibliographic searches can be carried out by means of detailed printed catalogs. These have also been deposited at several Belgian university libraries.
