This set of six tablets dates from the 14th century and was probably
produced in a French workshop.
The first and the last tablet are decorated on the outside with religious
scenes; the four others are blank and have hollowed out compartments on
both sides in which the wax was poured. The set was preserved in its original
holster of cuir-bouilli, where the notches for the stylet and the string are
still visible.
This acquisition is truly exceptional. The Archaeological Museum of Namur is
the only other public collection to possess a similar piece.
Provenance: private collection; antiquarian bookseller C. Van Loock (Brussels)
Acquired in October 1997
