The Martyrologium Syriacum keeps strictly to the original pattern of a martyrology. As a rule it only lists martyrs, including a series of bishops of Antioch erroneously considered martyrs. Exceptions are three commemorations of bishops, which differ from the usual entries by their form. The idea of an universal martyrology was suggested by one of the sources which was used by the compiler but was not identical with the lost “compilation of ancient martyrs” of Eusebius of Caesarea. Unfounded is the assumption of an “Arian” tendency as well as the supposition that the first entries were intended to form a liturgical Christmas cycle.
Les versions grecque et syriaque de la Vita de S. Aninas que nous conservons ne contiennent pas de données chronologiques. Les traductions slavonnes de textes byzantins perdus sur ce saint permettent toutefois de reconstituer sa vie plus en détail. Il apparaît ainsi qu’Aninas demeura près de Néocésarée (act. Dibsi Faraj) et guérit de nombreuses personnes renommées de son temps. L’une d’entre elles, jusqu’ici inconnue, fut Serge l’Isaurien, le général qui défit les Arabes Lakhmides en 484. On peut par ailleurs déduire qu’Aninas mourut le 18 mars de l’année 488.
Tel qu’il nous est parvenu, le Old English Martyrology est un martyrologe historique contenant plus de 200 commémorations de saints, qui apparaît avoir été composé en Mercie durant le IXe s. Le présent article démontre cependant que le texte qui subsiste est une traduction en langue vernaculaire d’un martyrologe latin antérieur – aujourd’hui perdu – compilé en Northumbrie au cours des années 731-740. Divers témoignages suggèrent que le compilateur de cette source latine fut Acca, évêque d’Hexham et ami proche de Bède. Cette attribution jette une lumière nouvelle sur la genèse des martyrologes historiques, y compris celui de Bède, de même que sur la circulation du Martyrologium Hieronymianum dans la Northumbrie du début du VIIIe s.
Dans aucun des manuscrits conservés, la structure de la Vita Patricii composée par Muirchú (BHL 6497) n’apparaît clairement. Cependant, le témoignage des capitula ainsi que les divisions principales de l’œuvre, telles qu’on les trouve dans les manuscrits, montrent que cette Vita était conçue comme une œuvre tripartite. Cela s’accorde du reste avec la structure narrative de l’œuvre: le Livre I envisage les premières années de la vie de Patrick et la conversion de la gens; le Livre II traite de ses rencontres avec les mortels; le Livre III expose ses rencontres avec les anges ainsi que sa mort.
Accepting the principle of a probable continuum of Christian saintliness from the origins down to our time, the aim of the present study is to see with regard to the idea of a “holy death” whether the canons or the topoi of hagiographical literature of early and mediaeval times still function today. In contemplating, living and describing a Christian death the task of the historian is to take the spirituality of the 19 th and 20 th centuries seriously, to examine it for its own sake and to be able to read with an open mind and with profit the thousands of biographical texts produced by contemporary Catholicism.
The Passio of St Sebastian and his companions published by Migne in PG 116 (cols. 793-816) under the name of Symeon Metaphrastes is in reality an abridgment of the text found in Metaphrastic December menologia. The source used by Metaphrastes has apparently not survived. Some elements of it are, however, found in the canon composed in the previous century by Joseph the Hymnographer (probably † 860) in honour of St Sebastian and his companions. The text of the Metaphrastic Passio is edited here for the first time on the basis of eight witnesses of the 11 th century, while a new edition of the abridgment is given at the foot of the pages which contains a much improved transcription of the sole witness (MS. Paris. gr. 1195, 14th century, ff. 11 r -17 v ) published by Migne.
Study of manuscript tradition and critical edition of the two versions of the Passio sanctae Firminae. The oldest one (BHL 3001b) was reemployed to be used for other hagiographical traditions: for Firma of Civitavecchia (who was eventually identified with Firmina of Amelia), as well as for the Roman saints Digna and Merita, whose Passio (BHL 2160) is used here for the first time to establish the text that was its model.
One of the most famous episodes in the religious history of Catalonia in the 14th c. is the translation of a relic of Thecla from Armenian Cilicia to Tarragona. Together with the relic the Armenian King Oshin sent King James II of Aragon a Latin text of the Vita of Thecla (BHL 8022b-c). A detailed analysis reveals that the document is a Latin translation of two Armenian texts: the apocryphal Acta Theclae and the Prodigia Theclae. Furthermore, an unedited appendix to this Latin document brings us face to face with the question of the existence of the relics of Thecla at Seleucia, a thorny question ever since the time of pseudo-Basil of Seleucia.
Brussels manuscripts B. R. 197 and 409 belong to a legendary compiled at Rouge-Cloître in the third quarter of the 15th century. The compiler considered it useful to add another prologue of his own composition before the preface of the Legenda aurea (Brussels, B. R. 409, f. 4 r-v ). In fact it is a patchwork of hagiographic topoi (from the Passiones of Chrysanthus and Daria, of Fides, Spes and Caritas, and of Cecilia; from the Vita of Maria of Oignies) with the intention of justifying the reading and imitation of the acts of the saints.
