SUMMARY:Heritage Day @ KBR museum
DESCRIPTION:On Heritage Day 2026\, KBR invites young and old to discover heritage from its most playful side. This year’s edition is all about humour: laughter\, wonder and a touch of mischief through the centuries. \nDuring your visit\, you will discover that people in the Middle Ages and the early modern period enjoyed jokes just as much as we do today. Medieval manuscripts teem with funny figures\, bizarre animals and absurd scenes\, while texts and plays reveal how humour could connect\, challenge and amuse. \nOn the occasion of Heritage Day\, the KBR museum is free to visit. In addition\, KBR is organising a number of free activities for families\, curious visitors and heritage lovers. Places are limited: advance booking is recommended. \n\n \n Book your free ticket \n\n \n\n  \n\n\nOpen workshop – Create your own medieval meme\nFeeling creative? In this open workshop\, you draw inspiration from the humorous margins of medieval manuscripts and create your own medieval meme. Using colours\, pens and ink\, humour and imagination come together in an activity that is fun for both children and adults. \n\n \n Discover the workshop \n\n \n\n  \n\n\nLecture – Lachen vóór de Verlichting: humor in het vroegmoderne Europa (NL)\nWhat did people find funny in the past? And where was the line between laughter\, satire and seriousness? In this accessible lecture\, researcher Lieke Stelling takes you into the world of humour before the Enlightenment\, with surprising examples that show laughter is truly timeless. \n\n \n About the lecture \n\n \n\n  \n\n\nLecture – De la drôlerie gothique au « mèmediéval » : rire au Moyen Âge (FR)\nWhy did medieval images make people laugh\, and why do they still amuse us today? In this lecture\, researcher Julia Pineau explores gothic drolleries—playful and sometimes absurd figures in the margins of medieval manuscripts—and shows how medieval humour continues to resonate\, from scholarship to internet memes. \n\n \n About the lecture

SUMMARY:KBR and Bpost celebrate the Queen Elisabeth Competition
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Queen Elisabeth Competition and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Queen Elisabeth\, KBR is hosting a special event. \nIn collaboration with Bpost\, a new postage stamp will be launched at KBR in tribute to the Queen Elisabeth Competition and will be available for purchase on site. On that day\, you will be able to buy the stamp and have your letters or postcards postmarked at KBR. \nThe stamp pays tribute to Elisabeth of Belgium\, born in 1876\, an important figure in Belgian cultural life. Since 1951\, it has been known as the Queen Elisabeth Competition\, now one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world. \nThe stamp features a portrait of the Queen holding a violin. In the background is an excerpt from the manuscript score of Eugène Ysaÿe’s Sonata for Two Violins\, a work dedicated to her. The competition’s logo completes the design. On this occasion\, you will also be able to admire the original score in the entrance hall of KBR\, from our rich musical collection\, which served as inspiration for the stamp. \nPractical information\n\nWhen? 13 April\, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.\nWhere? SUMMARY:Booklab: New Life for Paper [Fully booked]
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, graphic designer Astrid Fieuws approaches bookbinding with a fresh perspective\, inspired by the rich book culture of the Burgundian dukes\, which you can discover at the KBR museum. Starting from leftover paper from KBR and from her own studio\, you will get to work creating a unique notebook. \nIn a fully manual\, step-by-step process\, you will assemble your own notebook: from selecting and combining papers to organising\, gluing and finishing the book. No specialised tools are required\, making it easy to apply this technique at home afterwards. \nSpecial attention is given to the grain direction of the paper\, the structure of the book\, and various cover options\, including a reinforced self-cover. You will experiment with materials\, structure and finishing\, and go home with a personal and sustainable object that gives existing paper a new meaning. \nNo prior experience required – just curiosity and a desire to work with your hands! \n\n \n buy your ticket \n\n \n \n Discover the KBR museum \n\n \n  \nAbout the workshop leader\nAstrid Fieuws is a graphic designer and the (grand)daughter of a family of printers. SUMMARY:Self-guided workshop: writing with a quill & painting with pigments
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the Middle Ages\, Brussels belonged to the dukes of Burgundy. These rich and powerful rulers and cultured benefactors built up a treasure of inestimable value: the Librairie\, a unique collection of manuscripts. Many of the works in this collection\, which have survived the ravages of time\, are preserved at KBR. You can admire them today at the KBR museum. \nCombine your visit to the museum with this self-guided drop-in session and explore your skills as a medieval miniaturist or copyist. We provide all the materials and set you up comfortably—you just have to let your creativity flow! \n  \nPainting with pigments\nIn the Middle Ages\, illuminators did not use watercolours or gouache in their studios. They made their colours directly from natural materials or pigments imported from faraway lands. Discover the pleasure of creating your own colours from powdered pigments and gum arabic\, then illuminate a coat of arms or a detail of a manuscript! \n  \nWriting with a quill\nTry your hand at calligraphy! SUMMARY:Boesmans Wave 26 @ KBR
DESCRIPTION:Boesmans Wave 26 @ KBR\nIn February and March\, KBR is joining La Monnaie\, Flagey\, the Brussels Philharmonic\, the Royal Conservatory of Brussels\, the Royal Academy of Belgium\, and the Klara Festival to celebrate the work of Philippe Boesmans (1936–2022) through concerts\, masterclasses\, and lectures. \n\n \n Browse the schedule \n\n \n  \n  \nFor KBR\, what could be more natural and exciting than to be part of this event? In 2021\, KBR helped save seventeen manuscripts by this internationally renowned Belgian composer from being dispersed\, with the support of the King Baudouin Foundation for the acquisition of the collection. Deposited at KBR\, these scores were not only stored in proper conservation materials but also catalogued online\, ensuring their preservation and accessibility. Recently\, they have also been featured on a new website dedicated to the composer. \n\n \n Discover the new website \n\n \n  \n  \nEvent at KBR\nDuring these festive weeks\, KBR will host\, on March 6 at 12:30 PM\, the Composition and Classical Writing class from the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles (CrB). This is a perfect opportunity to be moved by the younger generation and to hear them respond to the works of van Rossum and Boesmans. \n\n \n Info and tickets \n\n \n  \nIllustration © C. SUMMARY:European Public Domain Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:On the first day of each new year\, a significant amount of heritage enters the public domain. This is the perfect material to make as freely accessible as possible\, although this is not always the case yet.
