The Belgian Bibliography is a record of all works published in Belgium or written by a Belgian author. It documents the publishing output of this country, providing an invaluable resource for researchers, librarians, publishers and the general public. Beyond being used as an information source, the bibliography plays a crucial role in preserving and showcasing Belgium’s literary, academic and creative heritage.

In February 1875, the first issue of the Belgian Bibliography was published. This date marked the beginning of a longstanding commitment to documenting Belgium’s publishing landscape, and over the past 150 years the bibliography has adapted to many technological and societal changes while still being handled with precision and dedication.

To commemorate this round anniversary, this exhibition delves into various fascinating aspects of the bibliography. It invites you to explore the history of the bibliography, going from the earliest editions to the modern-day digital formats, as well as to gain insight into the backgrounds and workflows involved in publishing the bibliography.

The exhibition also sheds some light on the critical purpose of the Belgian Bibliography: to preserve Belgium’s intellectual and cultural legacy, support the nation’s research and ensure the accessibility of information for generations to come.
