Organized by Urban, the Urban Summer festival opens the doors to contemporary architecture. From 21 June until 4 July, guided tours, installations, open days, workshops, conferences and exhibitions are available free of charge to everyone at Mont des Arts.
Each year, a curator is invited to present his or her vision of contemporary architecture and to participate in the programmation of this festival.
This year, the curatorial team brings together three complementary profiles: Brussels-based militant faction of architecture Traumnovelle, explorative design lab humbble, and researcher and musician Katía Truijen. Together, they take over the Mont des Arts which, for the occasion, will be divided into 5 themes: LIFE, EDUCATION, CEREMONY, LOVE and DEATH. Architectural installations that represent the fundamental acts defining our societies inhabit the space of the Mont des Arts.
The installation by Jean-Benoît Vétillard, which will decorate the peristyle of KBR overlooking the Mont des Art, will be dedicated to the theme of education, dear to KBR. He was inspired by the game of the ‘mât de Cocagne’ or ‘greasy pole’, where players climb a slippery pole in the hopes of catching the bountiful prize at the top. This modern device that illuminates the passage of KBR allows groups to gather, speak, enter into discussion, and listen to loudreaders or music to be played.
Jean-Benoit proposes an educational space without a center, instead inviting for a more complex and horizontal exchanges between people. In addition, its location is an invitation for the wanderer to explore the dark corners and hidden terrasses of the Mont des Arts.
The installation is accessible during KBR’s opening hours, from Monday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
