Book launch "Philippe Vandermaelen, Mercator de la jeune Belgique"
In 1827, a young and wealthy merchant from Brussels with a great passion for geography published an Atlas Universel that was breathtaking in its ambition, boldness and innovation. The self-taught Philippe Vandermaelen became almost overnight one of the great cartographers of his time.
Marguerite Silvestre, historian and curator of collections of the Maps and Plans collection, is the main author of seven scientific inventories devoted to Philippe Vandermaelen and the Etablissement géographique de Bruxelles.
