SUMMARY:Heritage Day @ KBR museum
DESCRIPTION:On Heritage Day 2026\, KBR invites young and old to discover heritage from its most playful side. This year’s edition is all about humour: laughter\, wonder and a touch of mischief through the centuries. \nDuring your visit\, you will discover that people in the Middle Ages and the early modern period enjoyed jokes just as much as we do today. Medieval manuscripts teem with funny figures\, bizarre animals and absurd scenes\, while texts and plays reveal how humour could connect\, challenge and amuse. \nOn the occasion of Heritage Day\, the KBR museum is free to visit. In addition\, KBR is organising a number of free activities for families\, curious visitors and heritage lovers. Places are limited: advance booking is recommended. \n\n \n Book your free ticket \n\n \n\n  \n\n\nOpen workshop – Create your own medieval meme\nFeeling creative? In this open workshop\, you draw inspiration from the humorous margins of medieval manuscripts and create your own medieval meme. Using colours\, pens and ink\, humour and imagination come together in an activity that is fun for both children and adults. \n\n \n Discover the workshop \n\n \n\n  \n\n\nLecture – Lachen vóór de Verlichting: humor in het vroegmoderne Europa (NL)\nWhat did people find funny in the past? And where was the line between laughter\, satire and seriousness? In this accessible lecture\, researcher Lieke Stelling takes you into the world of humour before the Enlightenment\, with surprising examples that show laughter is truly timeless. \n\n \n About the lecture \n\n \n\n  \n\n\nLecture – De la drôlerie gothique au « mèmediéval » : rire au Moyen Âge (FR)\nWhy did medieval images make people laugh\, and why do they still amuse us today? In this lecture\, researcher Julia Pineau explores gothic drolleries—playful and sometimes absurd figures in the margins of medieval manuscripts—and shows how medieval humour continues to resonate\, from scholarship to internet memes. \n\n \n About the lecture

SUMMARY:KBR and Bpost celebrate the Queen Elisabeth Competition
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Queen Elisabeth Competition and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Queen Elisabeth\, KBR is hosting a special event. \nIn collaboration with Bpost\, a new postage stamp will be launched at KBR in tribute to the Queen Elisabeth Competition and will be available for purchase on site. On that day\, you will be able to buy the stamp and have your letters or postcards postmarked at KBR. \nThe stamp pays tribute to Elisabeth of Belgium\, born in 1876\, an important figure in Belgian cultural life. Passionate about music and a violinist herself\, she founded the Eugène Ysaÿe International Competition in 1937\, named after her violin teacher. Since 1951\, it has been known as the Queen Elisabeth Competition\, now one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world. \nThe stamp features a portrait of the Queen holding a violin. In the background is an excerpt from the manuscript score of Eugène Ysaÿe’s Sonata for Two Violins\, a work dedicated to her. The competition’s logo completes the design. On this occasion\, you will also be able to admire the original score in the entrance hall of KBR\, from our rich musical collection\, which served as inspiration for the stamp. \nPractical information\n\nWhen? 13 April\, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.\nWhere? KBR – Gutenberg entrance hall\nPrice? Free admission

SUMMARY:Performance “Too Body To Fail”
DESCRIPTION:Let yourself be carried away by Too Body To Fail\, a surprising live performance where movement\, space and creativity come together. Students from the KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture and LUCA School of Arts invite you on a unique journey through KBR\, using their bodies as the starting point for artistic research and experimentation. \nThroughout the semester\, the students explored questions such as: “How does our bodily presence shape space?”\, “How do we move as a group?”\, “How does a place change when we respond to it performatively?”. Guided by lecturers Esther Venrooij and Pieterjan Ginckels\, they discovered new forms of attention\, collaboration and embodied creativity. \nOn Friday 19 December at 9.30 AM\, they will share the results of this exploration in a live performance unfolding across several spaces in KBR. The journey begins in the inner garden\, moves through the central staircase hall\, and reaches its finale in the general reading room. \nCome watch\, be surprised\, and experience how the students reshape the architecture and atmosphere of KBR through rhythm\, body and movement!

A connection is made between order and disorder\, simplicity and complexity\, as if to explore their endless variations. \nThrough dance\, a fleeting presence fills the space with clarity\, gradually turning chaotic. This performance\, conceived as a wandering through the spaces of the museum\, invites different eras and aesthetics to meet in a spellbinding and meditative journey.  \n\nConcept and performance: Constance Diard \nSound design: Antoine Degonville \nSchedule:\n\n8:00 – 8:30 PM\n9:30 – 10:00 PM\n11:00 – 11:30 PM\n\n\n\n  \nFlash Tattoo night \nLooking for something special to make the Museum Night Fever even more memorable? Get a flash tattoo at the Nassau Chapel with Dori\, Graouh\, and Harissa from Mue Tattoo for €60 per tattoo. The designs are inspired by imaginative miniatures from medieval manuscripts. Your chance to have your favorite drollery inked on your skin. Do you prefer something a bit less permament ? Stick-on temporary tattoos are also for sale\, €5 for 10 pieces. \n\nSchedule:\n\n7:00 PM – 1:00 PM\n\n\n\nIf you’re tempted by a tattoo\, please remember to bring cash or Payconiq\, as card payments are not possible in the Chapel of Nassau. Candidates can register on site for a time slot as soon as the venue opens. Arriving early is recommended! \nInto the Light \nImmerse yourself in a musical journey in two parts! Mona Mio unveils Into the Light and invites Cassandre and Mount Rose to intertwine their writing on stage. The evening will switch between an electric\, groovy and intense set by Mona Mio live band and the sensitive and refined acoustic performances of Cassandre and Mount Rose.   \nWriting is central to this project\, under the artistic direction of Mona Mio. Each artist defends a personal\, direct and uncompromising message. Through these contrasting formats\, there is stage energy on one side and raw intimacy on the other. Spotlight on Brussels’ emerging independent and committed scene\, driven by FINTA artists. A generation of performers for whom the stage is a place for words as much as for music.  \n\n\nSchedule:7:30 – 7:50 PM | Cassandre \n8:00 – 8:20 PM | Mona Mio \n8:30 – 8:50 PM | Mount Rose \n9:00 – 9:50 PM | Mona Mio \n10:00 – 10:30 PM | Mount Rose \n10:30 – 11:00 PM | Mona Mio \n11:30 PM – 12:00 AM | Cassandre \n12:00 – 12:50 AM | Mona Mio

SUMMARY:The Art of Digitising the Past – Visit to KBR’s Digitisation Lab (reserved for Friends of the KBR museum)[fully booked]
DESCRIPTION:We invite the Friends of the KBR museum to an exclusive visit to KBR’s digitisation lab.  \nFrédéric Lemmers\, head of the digitisation department for over 20 years\, will take you behind the scenes of the digitisation of illuminated medieval manuscripts. \nYou’ll also have the opportunity to observe the automatic scanners in action — a fascinating technology that never fails to impress our visitors!  \nThe visit will take place in Dutch and French and is intended for a group of 5 to 15 people. \nTo reserve your spot\, please send an email to development@kbr.be. If you’re not yet a Friend of the KBR museum\, sign up here.
