Medal production in Belgium, and in our region prior to 1830, beautifully combines the art of sculpture with history. Thanks to this heritage, it is possible to trace the political, economic, and social history of our country’s towns and villages at the local level.
The entire collection of Belgian medals numbers approximately 20,000 pieces. In the database, only the years 1794 through 1909 have been entered so far. This represents more than 10,000 medals that can be viewed online.
How to search information about the medals?
To find the desired information, the “object type” field must contain the keyword “medal.” To filter out irrelevant results and narrow down the search, the user can use the fields “city, ruler, date, material,” or keywords in the “caption” and “description” sections.
Reference works
A number of reference works are part of our book collections, which are stored in the Cabinet des Médailles’ stacks. The website of the Royal Numismatic Society of Belgium lists the most important works. See also:
