Visiting the KBR museum with a mobility impairment

Access to the building

KBR is wheelchair accessible, but the location of the building on the Mont des Arts presents some challenges.

At Boulevard de l’Empereur 4, a few public parking spaces are reserved for people with disabilities. The underground paid parking “Albertina” is located at Place de la Justice 16, where a total of 15 parking spaces are reserved for people with disabilities.

Please note that the Mont des Arts is an area with many stairs. If you wish to reach the KBR entrance by wheelchair or if you have difficulty walking and want to avoid stairs, it is best to follow the route shown on the map below from the surrounding parking areas.

The distance of this route is approximately 500 meters. All passages along this route are wide enough, and the surface is paved throughout, but due to the steep slope, you may need assistance.

The main entrance is located at Mont des Arts 28 and is clearly marked. Use the accessible ramp to enter. The doors open automatically.

At the reception desk, you can collect a ticket if needed. The counter is wheelchair-accessible on the left side, and a mobile payment system is available.

From the entrance hall, a long corridor leads to the museum. This corridor is accessible via a ramp without obstacles.

At the end of the ramp, there is a glass elevator that takes you to level 0 – the entrance level of the KBR museum.

Accessibility in the museum

The entire museum route is wheelchair accessible. Visitors can enter the Nassau Chapel via a specially constructed ramp.

There is also an elevator to reach the upper floor of the museum. Pressing the button on the outside will open the door automatically. Once inside the elevator, you need to hold a button down to go up.

The floors are level and free of obstacles throughout. Display cases are wheelchair-accessible, and interactive elements such as touchscreens and tablets can be used from a seated position.

Toilets

The nearest accessible toilets to the museum are located on level -2, the same level as the reception area. You can reach them by taking the long corridor with the ramp from the reception area, past the glass elevator.

Please note: the accessible toilet is functional but not ideally equipped. The space around the toilet is limited, a support rail is missing, and the lateral transfer zone is 1 meter wide instead of the recommended 1.10 meters.

We will take this into account in future improvements to our infrastructure.

On-site aids

A limited number of wheelchairs are available at the KBR reception for use during your visit.

Along the museum route, benches are provided in several places for resting.

In addition, folding chairs are available for visitors who would like to sit more frequently during their visit.

Assistance or support

Visitors with a disability have free access to the museum. Anyone accompanying you is also admitted free of charge.

Although animals are generally not allowed in KBR, assistance dogs are, of course, welcome.
