Congres KU Leuven Cross-Media Perspectives: Technical Studies of Art on Panel, Paper and Parchment (1400-1600)
The 23rd edition of the international and interdisciplinary “Symposium for the Study of Underdrawing and Technology in Painting: Cross-Media Perspectives” will be held on January 11, 12 and 13.
This year’s program will focus on the presentation of new technical studies in art history, concentrating on the art of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (1400-1600). Lectures and sessions will concentrate on the technical examination of art in various media and supports: paintings on panel, canvas and parchement, as well as drawings and prints.

“Recent advancements in viewing platforms, artificial intelligence, and machine learning hold the potential to offer innovative research avenues, foster collaboration, and bridge the gap between art and science.” (Technical Art Studies 2024 Leuven)
Two workshops are to be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 and will focus on non-invasive techniques with, for one workshop white light and multispectral microdome and for the other workshop, narrow-band multispectral imaging.
Practical information
- The conference is organized by KU Leuven and KBR.
- The first two days of the congress (Thursday, January 11 and Friday, January 12, 2024) will be held in KU Leuven premises (Maria-Theresiacollege and University Library).
- The third day will be held at KBR (Saturday January 13, 2024).
