Temperature and relative humidity are among the main factors that continuously affect the condition of collections. Inappropriate levels of either factor, which cannot be considered separately due to their interaction, can lead to serious deterioration. In the worst cases, this may be irreversible.
A centralised monitoring system
Maintaining appropriate preservation conditions requires a thorough understanding of the environmental conditions to which the collections are exposed. Given the size of KBR’s storage areas, this is only possible through a centralised, automated system that continuously monitors temperature and relative humidity across the various collection storage spaces. KBR is currently implementing an ambitious project to establish such a system.
Risk assessment
By comparing indoor climate measurements with the outdoor climate data provided daily by the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI), KBR can assess potential risks to its collections and make informed decisions to support an effective climate management strategy.
The role of our building
Understanding how the building reacts to outdoor climate conditions is essential to choosing the best measures for preserving the collections in a sustainable way. These may include passive solutions, such as improving wall insulation or installing double glazing, as well as active measures, such as adjusting or upgrading the air-conditioning system.
SMS alert system
In addition, the alert system (SMS, email, etc.) linked to the centralised monitoring system for temperature and relative humidity will enable staff to respond quickly in the event of an incident, helping to limit or even prevent damage to the collections.
