KBR, more than a library

KBR has been completely redesigned to treasure time. It is an inspiring place where you have access to exceptional knowledge. As a public space in the heart of Brussels, KBR attracts many passers-by and students who are looking for a pleasant place to study, read, work or have a bite.

Just like the heritage that we preserve, the inner garden and the beautiful view of Brussels are among our treasures. In 2019, many adjustments were made to offer visitors relaxation spaces where it is even more pleasant to stay. Discover the extras that KBR provides on this page.

Thanks to the redesign of the reception of KBR, it became a very pleasant place to abide. Take a seat in our lounge while you wait for your appointment or work quietly on your laptop. You can buy a museum ticket or a reader’s card at the counter. The staff will help you with all of your questions.

In our courtyard you can get a breath of fresh air while taking a break from studying or researching. It is a green and pleasant resting place in the middle of the busy center of the city.

Our shop is the right place to visit if you are looking for a book or a nice gift.

You can buy the books and exhibition catalogues that KBR publishes, prints of works by famous artists and unique products that we develop in collaboration with artists.

Exhibition space

In 2019, KBR renovated the palace of Charles of Lorraine, an 18th-century palace encased in the library building. The palace was transformed into a beautiful exhibition space, the first exhibition being “The World of Bruegel in Black and White“. The exhibition showed a complete collection of Bruegel’s prints in the context of the Bruegel Year.

In 2022, KBR and the Musical Instruments Museum (MIM) celebrated Toots Thielemans’ 100th birthday with an exhibition entitled “Toots 100. The Sound of a Belgian Legend”. Until 31 August 2022, visitors were able to enjoy an immersive exhibition in which sound and music play the leading role.

Until 2 June 2024, visitors can visit it for the exhibition “James Ensor. Inspired by Brussels”, a collaboration between KBR and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. With 18 paintings, 24 drawings and 33 prints, the exhibition brings together an exceptionally large number of original works by the master in a unique historical setting.
